supremes 21 TIMELY INSIDE INFO: The Supremes (the REAL Dreamgirls) Couldnt Get A Hit

“Dreamgirls” is playing L.A. at the Ahmanson Theater….but…….

Not many people realize that before they reached #1 with their “first” hit, “Where Did Our Love Go?”… [lastfm]The Supremes[/lastfm], for a couple years on the national charts, couldn’t BUY a smash.

They debuted on the country’s Top 100 in August of 1962 with “Your Heart Belongs To Me,” which peaked at #95!

More releases would follow in the next two years, quite a few more, like “Let Me Go The Right Way,” “A Breath Taking Guy,” “When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes,” and “Run Run Run.”

Most of them couldn’t even crack the top 75 (except for “Lovelight” at #23).

Things looked bad for the future “Dreamgirls of MOTOWN”…..until….Motown president Berry Gordy Jr. approached them with a song that the Marvelettes turned down; something called “Where Did Our Love Go?”

The Supremes didn’t much like it either, but, after “Run Run Run” ran out of steam (it peaked at #93 as the girls were on a downward spiral and things looked gloomy at Gordyville) Berry insisted they record it; that is was right for them.

It was the summer of 1964 and we were right in the middle of Beatlemania!

The girls begrudgingly went into the studio, layed down the tracks, the song was released…and…AND!!!  VIOLA, a NUMBER ONE SMASH!!!

“Baby Love” followed and hit #1, “Come See About Me” after that; IT hit #1…

We were now in early 1965…

“Stop! In the Name of Love” #1!!!  “Back in My Arms Again” NUMBER ONE…these gals couldn’t be stopped, in the name of love or anything else…

They ended up an incredible run with TWELVE NATIONAL NUMBER ONE SONGS by the late 60’s, and then, lead singer [lastfm]Diana Ross[/lastfm], left the group to go solo.

Ironically, their last #1 hit was “Someday We’ll Be Together.”

Diana and the gals NEVER DID get back together again….but their incredible run of the (turn) tables had never been nearly matched by any other all-girl rock’n’roll group up until they stormed the charts.

[lastfm]Diana Ross[/lastfm], [lastfm]Mary Wilson[/lastfm] and [lastfm]Florence Ballard[/lastfm], the original Supremes; indeed, the “DREAMGIRLS of MOTOWN!!!!”
