A Motown First

miracles yesterday1 A Motown First

On this day in 1961, [lastfm]The Miracles[/lastfm] became the FIRST MOTOWN act to perform on Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand,” a daily half-hour rock music/dance show on ABC-TV.

Popular with both teens and young adults, after getting home from school every weekday afternoon, Bandstand was a “must watch” for the transistor radio set.

By this time, almost 50 years ago, high tech of the day put transistor radios in more and more peoples’  shirt pockets and purses and were the equivalent of todays’ iPods.

Most of the new portables had six transistors, some had only five, and, if our memory serves us correctly, nine transistor radios followed.  We never did figure out just what the advantage was in having more transistors.  Anyone know?  Feel free to comment….

Hey, if you’re carrying around your new six transistor radio, don’t risk scratching it, or, worse still, dropping it and cracking the plastic housing….ALWAYS put it in that nifty leather case it came with!  It’s got lots of holes in front of it so you can still hear the Miracles right through the case!!

[lastfm]Smokey Robinson[/lastfm] (can you spot him?) and his Miracles were riding high on the national charts this week with their first big hit, “Shop Around.”

Here’s something hard to believe; with all of the hits that followed for the group, throughout the 60’s and early 70’s, they wouldn’t score their first national #1 song until late 1970 with “Tears of a Clown.”

Something more amazing; they wouldn’t have their next top 10 hit until 2 years AFTER “Shop Around!”

“You Really Got a Hold on Me” was only the 2nd time they’d reach “top 10” status in early 1963.

“Shop Around” peaked at #2 in early 1961.miracles line up A Motown First

John Lennon said Smokey Robinson was one of his favourite (British spelling) song writers….and…………

Bob Dylan gives Smokey “props” as “the greatest living poet.”
