Today's Tickets @ 2 Song: "(Christmas)Baby Please Come Home" by U2

monkees1 Monkee Mickey Makes Merry on Monday....

Happy Birthday, March 8th, to former Monkee [lastfm]Mickey Dolenz[/lastfm] (second from right).

Big fans of the [lastfm]Monkees[/lastfm] may already know  that Mickey was a TV star years BEFORE the Monkees.

Mickey starred in the TV series “Circus Boy” in the 50’s!  He was just a little chimp at that time.

Mickey got picked to be a Monkee among 437 other applicants for the gig, including Paul Williams (songwriter), Danny Hutton (who, three years later, showed up with Three Dog Night!) and Stephen Stills (who got PICKED but dropped out when he heard he’d have to give up the publishing rights to his songs).

Stephen then suggested to his then-roommate, that HE should audition for the group.  His roommate took Stephen’s advice and landed a slot.  Stephen’s loss was Peter Tork’s gain!!

Monkee Davy Jones didn’t have to audition.  Producers of the projected TV show already knew of Davy from his previous work and knew he’d be perfect for one of the 4 openings.

Michael Nesmith, by also winning the auditions along with Mickey and Peter, rounded out the Monkees:  Davy Jones, Mickey Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork.  “Hey hey, they’re the Monkees!!”

Their TV show debuted in the fall of 1966 on NBC.

Concurrently, their first hit, “Last Train To Clarksville,” rocketed up the charts.

“Monkee Mania” soon followed, with hits like “Daydream Believer,” “Steppin’ Stone,” “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You,” “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” “Valleri,” and their biggest smash (written by Neil Diamond) “I’m a Believer”!!

  1. Annette Hughes says:

Oh the Monkees the heart throbs of my teenage years.
My girlfriend and I were 15 when their show debuted.
We absolutely loved them. We saw them in concert when they came to Phila, Pa in July of ’67.
Years later my girlfriend was lucky enough to run into Davy Jones in person on the street in center city Phila.
    Wonderful memories of them.
