Hometown Heroes Weekend

sonny cher Hometown Heroes Weekend

I was looking over some of the Greatest Hits on Earth that I’ll play kicking off our Hometown Heroes Weekend, and some of the heroes that I had the pleasure to meet, which is a fringe benefit of what I do.

We’ll feature [lastfm]The Associations[/lastfm] “Along Comes Mary”, which was a very controversial song at the time and also very hip. The Association was the ‘house’ band at the Ice House in Pasadena and because of those controversial lyrics they had a hard time landing a record deal, finally signing with a small label Vanguard Records, rewarding the record label with a monster hit.

Then there’s [lastfm]Sonny & Cher[/lastfm], Sonny was an L.A. Record promo man, Cher was a studio backup singer for Phil Spector. Sonny wrote “The Beat Goes On”, appeared live on The Real Don Steele’s radio show on 93/KHJ, we knew it and loved it as Boss Radio. The Beat Goes On was sung at Sonny’s funeral, and has the song title engraved on his headstone. A Hometown Hero gone but not forgotten!

As we like to say on K-EARTH-101: “AND THE BEAT GOES ON!”
