jackson 51 The Top Ten This Week 1970

A famous “Family Group” is in the top spot this week; their 3rd #1 hit in a row!

The Jackson 5 are in their debut year, 1970, with hits that are constantly on top of the charts! They made their first appearance on the top 100 with “I Want You Back” early this year (it reached #1) and their follow-up, “ABC,” also made the climb to the pinnacle of the list.

“The Love You Save” marks the THIRD consecutive time they’ve reached the highest position, but they wouldn’t stop there.

The group’s next release, “I’ll Be There,” will again give the Jacksons a #1 song.  It will stay at the top spot for FIVE weeks, making it their biggest hit of all-time as a group.  It will also be their LAST #1 hit as a family.

Back to THIS WEEK…here are the nation’s TOP TEN TUNES (last week’s position in brackets).

1. The Love You Save/The Jackson 5 (2) — this will stay on top for another week before Three Dog Night takes its place

2.    Mama Told Me (Not To Come)/Three Dog Night (5) — written by Randy Newman, this will be the group’s first #1 song and 4th top ten hit

3.    Ball of Confusion/The Temptations (6) — a social commentary, this is the song’s peak position.  It’s the group’s 12th top ten hit!  They’ll have 2 more #1 songs and many other top tens before their last chart appearance in 1991, “The Motown Song” with Rod Stewart

4.    The Long And Winding Road/The Beatles (1) — this is the Fab Four’s LAST #1 song and also the final appearance on the charts as a working group.  With the Beatles now dissolved, it marks the end of the most fabulous run of hits in the history of Rock ‘n’ Roll.  Capitol Records will release the “Revolver” album cut “Got To Get You Into My Life” as a single in 1976.   That tune will reach the top ten after a six year hiatus from the national top 100 by the Beatles as a group.

5.    Hitchin’ A Ride/Vanity Fare (9) — a five member pop group from England, this is their biggest hit.  It’s in its peak position and will stay at #5 next week before heading downward on the top ten.  Vanity Fare had a moderate hit early this year with their debut; “Early In The Morning.”

6.    Ride Captain Ride/Blues Image (11) the group’s only hit, it will stay on the top ten for four more weeks; peaking at #4

7. Get Ready/Rare Earth (4) — this is a remake of the Temptations 1966 hit.  Rare Earth would have 4 more top 20 tunes through this year and during 1971 before cooling off in 1972.

8.    Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)/Melanie (Safka) (10) — with the Edwin Hawkins Singers handling back-up vocals on this, her debut on the charts, she wrote most of her hits, including this one and “Brand New Key,” which would be a number one song for 3 weeks and her biggest chart success in late ’71-early ’72

9.    The Wonder Of You/Elvis (15) — a remake of the Ray Peterson late 50’s hit, which was on the same label; RCA Victor

10.   Which Way You Goin’ Billy?/The Poppy Family (3)a four member group from Canada, featuring husband and wife Terry and Susan Jacks.  Susan would have a top 30 solo hit in late summer with “That’s Where I Went Wrong” and Terry would make the #1 position for 3 weeks in early 1974 with the super-hit “Seasons In The Sun.”

Hearing these songs on KRTH, is 100 times better than JUST listing them. What are we waiting for?????

Re: The Temptations song “Ball of Confusion” You show a picture featuring David Ruffin who had left the group two years earlier. The lead tenor on that song (and starting with Cloud Nine) was Dennis Edwards
