Today's Tickets @ 2 Song: "Please Come Home For Christmas" by Eagles

Iconic film actor, John Wayne, is remembered for that distinct voice, his towering height, and for the roles that made him the epitome of  “masculinity.” One of his most noted characters is the rough and tough Rooster Cogburn of the 1969 award-winning movie, True Grit.

But the film that won John Wayne is first, and only, Oscar, is now being picked-up and redone by an interesting duo: The Coen Brothers. The makers of Burn After Reading and Intolerable Cruelty announced last year that they would be taking on the classic and transforming it into a true Coen Brothers’ remake.

So what are the differences between the 1969 version and the new movie, releasing December, 2010? The first, and most important change is the man that will embody Rooster Cogburn: The Duke is being replaced by The Dude. [lastfm]Jeff Bridges[/lastfm], an iconic actor himself, has taken on the role, and photos show that he has absolutely put his own spin on Rooster.

Joining Bridges is Josh Brolin, another Coen alum, as well as Matt Damon and Barry Pepper. And playing 14-year old Mattie Ross is newcomer Haile Steinfeld, who is actually 14, as opposed to ’69’s Kim Darby, who was 21 when she played the role.

There is one similarity that should be mentioned: both John Wayne and Jeff Bridges were 61-years old in their turns as Rooster Cogburn – but the action in the Coen take may be more authentic than the original in which Wayne was too unhealthy to do his own stunts.

The Coen remake should prove interesting, but until we can watch it for ourselves, take a look back at the original 1969 trailer, and check out the photo just released from the set of the 2010 film.

  • Did you notice that Bridges has his eyepatch on his right eye, whereas Wayne wore it on the left?
