At least, that’s what a new survey suggests. We already know that a few beers or glasses of wine can make people say and do some ridiculous things but could you be damaging your reputation by simply holding a drink?

A work-in-progress study from University professors, Scott Rick and Maurice Schweitzer, reveals that your credibility, or I.Q. more specifically, is negatively affected when you are seen with that Martini in hand. And don’t assume that the statistic doesn’t apply to you: whether you are male or female, drink beer or wine, or are perched at the bar or seated at a table, if someone sees that you are drinking, you may very likely come across as stupid.

In short, “It hurts you,” according to Professor Rick.

And the unfair stereotype goes further than the dining table: experiments were conducted on the perception of randomly selected people in society, the credibility of public speakers, and on the job-seeking process or business world. Rick and Schweitzer discovered that, in all three scenarios, being seen with an alcoholic beverage dimmed the perceived intelligence of the people holding the drinks.

So, the next time you are at a business dinner with your boss and you are asked if you would like a drink, maybe opt to pass, and order the “water with lemon” instead.
