Liza Minnelli is ‘Gaga,’ Talks New Music

[lastfm]Liza Minnelli[/lastfm] is not only a famous singer, but the talent is also one of only 12 people who are an “EGOT”—person who has won an Emmy, GRAMMY, Oscar and Tony award—so when she was recently asked who she likes in contemporary pop music, the news might come as a surprise.

The 64-year-old music veteran did not express her affection for a less controversial pop singer, such as [lastfm]Christina Aguilera[/lastfm], [lastfm]Mariah Carey[/lastfm], [lastfm]Taylor Swift[/lastfm]or [lastfm]Katy Perry[/lastfm], and spoke highly of  superstar [lastfm]Lady Gaga[/lastfm]. She said:

I love [lastfm]Lady Gaga[/lastfm]! I haven’t had a chance to see her live yet, but I like that she goes for it. I like somebody who says ‘wait a minute, watch this’ Ha! And that’s what she does.

And while Minnelli sans the praises of the controversial contemporary pop singer, she is sticking to classic tracks for her new album, which she says is based on songs she likes to sing around her piano when friends come over.

Among those songs is “At Last” by [lastfm]Etta James[/lastfm], which [lastfm]Beyonce[/lastfm] sang to much of the chagrin of James at the inauguration of President Obama. James might have talked poorly of Beyonce after her performance, but that doesn’t frighten Minnelli. Said the singer of Etta coming after:

No! Ha! And she can’t [claim to own the song]. I just have to say, who says?” says Liza. “I liked the Beyonce version very much too–that’s the trouble, there’s so many wonderful versions of this song. What I thought of, is this is not a lonesome, wailing song, this is a ‘thank god.’ So I put a smile in the song, and that’s the difference.

Minnelli‘s new album, Confessions, drops today.

I can’t believe Liza, who is a queen in her own league, could possibly like Gaga (the sound babies used to make when I was younger). Although Beyonce was ok, I felt it was disrespectful not to have Etta James sing it.
Liza , Etta, and let’s not forget Jennifer Hudson are and will continue to be classics…but Beyonce after the beauty is gone?????
