The soundtrack to [lastfm]Cirque Du Soleil[/lastfm]’s [lastfm]Beatles[/lastfm]-themed show “Love” was a huge hit, featuring remixed and redone versions of [lastfm]Beatles[/lastfm] classics. Now, the Cirque is looking for lighting to strike twice, this time with the soundtrack to “Viva [lastfm]Elvis[/lastfm],” the smash hit, [lastfm]Elvis Presley[/lastfm]-themed show!

The track listing on the record is a pretty good summary – or as good as one can get on one album – of [lastfm]Elvis[/lastfm]’ biggest hits. “Suspicious Minds” is the first song released from the record, and it fits the Cirque canon – original vocals and updated arraignments that still preserve the original while updating it:

“Blue Suede Shoes,” “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Can’t Help Falling In Love” also make the cut for the album.

“I can understand why the purist may be cautious and hesitant, but the new album is a unique way to bring [lastfm]Elvis[/lastfm]’ music to a whole new younger audience,” said Tom Cording, vice president of media relations for Legacy Recordings, Sony Music Entertainment’s catalog division.

How do you feel about these “remix” projects? Do you think they keep the legacy alive for artists like [lastfm]Elvis[/lastfm] for a younger generation? Or do they bastardize songs that can otherwise stand the test of time?

If I had never listened to Elvis sing, I would probably like it. The music is suppose to be for “the younger audience”. Well, the younger audience has parents. These parents listened to Elvis, I hope. If the younger audience has not caught on by now, do you really think they will now ? Elvis spent hours and days perfecting his music. The lyrics came first, then the music. “That’s The Way It Is”.
