Did You Know: "Lean on Me" by Bill Withers

A number one hit for Bill Withers, he could afford to buy a little Wurlitzer electric piano and record his first song when he was 32 years old, which is considered old in the music world just starting out. He was in the Navy for nine years, then worked in a factory making parts for airplanes. Rumor had it at the time, maybe it was his self-effacing humor, that he installed toilets on airplanes.

This song is considered a classic by most and artists from every generation continue to pay homage to this hit by performing it themselves. It’s an uplifting song that inspires and comforts you when you need just somebody to lean on.

[lastfm]Mary J. Blige[/lastfm] sang the song at a concert in Washington, DC to celebrate the inauguration of Barack Obama. [lastfm]Kid Rock[/lastfm], [lastfm]Sheryl Crow[/lastfm], and [lastfm]Keith Urban[/lastfm] performed an emotional version on the charity telethon, “Hope for Hatti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief,” held last January.
