The ‘Tickets @ Two’ song this afternoon is “Bennie & The Jets” by [lastfm]Elton John[/lastfm], a song he wrote as an homage to “Glam Rock,” a style defined by outrageous costumes that were popular in the early ’70s, especially UK artists like David Bowie.

“Bennie” is a female character according to Elton, describing her as a “sci-fi Rock Goddess.”

The falsetto vocal is Elton trying to sound like Frankie Valli. He was a fan of [lastfm]Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons[/lastfm] and always went to their concerts when he was growing up.

Elton didn’t think “Bennie & The Jets” would be a hit…think again, it went all the way to #1.

Elton is pure magic! I have seen him 9 times so far, starting with Dodger Stadium in ’75, at the height of his fame. I’ve been waiting awhile now for the opportunity to go to my 10th Elton concert, and I’ll be the first in line when it happens. LOVE “Bennie & the Jets” and glad to finally get the backstory on this!
