If ever there was an unlikely hero, it is undoubtedly Susan Boyle. Rising to fame after a now infamous appearance on the television talent show Britain’s Got Talent, the unassuming singer from a small town in northern England has wowed listeners worldwide with her stunning vocal talents.
With her second studio album The Gift being released last week, it has already started clocking up considerable scrobbles on Last.fm. We asked the Last.fm Trends team to look at her debut release, I Dreamed A Dream, to see what The Gift will have to achieve to keep Susan Boyle’s hype going…
I Dreamed A Dream was released at the tail end of 2009 and has so far recorded 591,110 scrobbles and 49,925 listeners. Despite being a covers album (except for “Who I Was Born To Be”) the album became the fastest selling album in the world for 2009.
Last.fm listeners responded to her stunning television audition of “I Dreamed A Dream,” from the musical Les Misérables, by making it the most played track on the album, with the track boasting 122,469 scrobbles and 26,765 listeners so far.
The second most popular song on the album only very slightly trails “I Dreamed A Dream.” “Wild Horses,” a cover of the 1971 original by The Rolling Stones, has 118,217 scrobbles and 23,679 listeners.
If she hadn’t sung “I Dreamed A Dream” during her audition, we have to wonder if “Wild Horses” would have wound up being the most popular track on the album.
Susan Boyle’s new album, The Gift, has only been released a week, but its listening stats look promising, with 10,511 plays and 930 listeners being recorded already.
If these early numbers are anything to go by, we should soon see Susan Boyle overcome her initial hype and become a permanent player on stereos worldwide.
