Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, 84-year-old [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Chuck Berry[/lastfm], fell ill while on stage at Chicago’s Congress Theater on Saturday night and reportedly slumped over on his keyboardist’s piano midway through a performance. His team rushed to his side and escorted him offstage to be examined by medics.

Concertgoers were startled by the event, but were reassured that Berry was okay once he returned to the stage 20 minutes later to thank the remaining audience members.

Chuck Berry, known for his rockin’ hits “Johnny B. Goode,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” “My Ding-a-ling,” and “Maybelline,” was check out by medics before his performance in Chicago because he felt ill. He still went on with the show, but later on, bent his head over to rest for several seconds during a song before his team rushed him off stage.

He didn’t lose consciousness, but concert promoter Michael Petryshyn told the WGN/Chicago Tribune team at Chicago Breaking News, “All I know is he felt faint, he felt weak, and I was told to call 911.”

Many audience members left the show after he was escorted off stage when they were told the show had ended, but those who stuck around got a reassuring surprise about 20 minutes later once Berry returned to the stage. He thanked the remaining fans who stuck around to support the 84-year-singer before leaving in a limo.

One fan who witnessed Berry collapsing stated he was “giving an erratic, out-of-tune performance when he seemed to fall ill.” After leaving the show, Berry reportedly signed a release declining further medical treatment. Let’s hope that means he’s feeling better!
