[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Annie Lennox[/lastfm] is best known for her innovative music and solo career after the [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Eurythmics[/lastfm], but the singer has also made a name for herself in activism work for AIDS. Her role with the anti-poverty group Oxfam and community outreach working with AIDS initiatives in Africa has helped earn Lennox one of the highest honors from Queen Elizabeth II.

Along with Lennox, guitarist/songwriter [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Richard Thompson[/lastfm] and the [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Buggles[/lastfm]’ Trevor Horn have both been recognized for their work and all have been named to Queen Elizabeth’s 2011 New Years Honour’s List for a Order of the British Empire award.

The annual OBE award recognizes hundreds of figures in the country that have found success pursuing any variety of professions, interests and charitable work.

Despite her success in music, Lennox was named an officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) based on her involved activism fighting AIDS in Africa.

Lennox commented on her website after receiving the honor saying she’s “genuinely honored,” despite the fact that “I was never much of one to win prizes.”

She added: “I take this as more of an appreciation for the gentle turning of the years for someone who’s enormously grateful for being able to breathe more or less freely in a totally insane world.”

Thompson and Horn were both recognized based of their lifelong success in music and Horn was shocked by the honor, humbly telling the Arbroath Herald that he was “amazed” by the award and “It’s not something you ever think about in my line of work because it so enjoyable anyway — you don’t look for any other rewards.”

All honorees will have their chance to personally thank and meet the Queen and participate in other festivities in the traditional award ceremony taking place later in the year.
