January 2nd is the day that big gym chains love the most. It’s the day when well-meaning New Year’s Resolutioners flood the facility, willing to pay initiation fees and sign a long-term contract just to start working on losing that gut.

But you don’t have to be one of them.

For the money of a year of gym dues, you can put together a home gym that will last many years longer. Let’s take it piece by piece:

CARDIO: Jump Rope ($20) – The easiest to do without a gym, cardiovascular exercise can be as simple as walking or jogging. However, one of the best – and most fun – cardio exercises is jumping rope. Get a good quality rope and it can outlast your waistline.

STRENGTH: Kettlebell ($35) – It looks old-fashioned, but the kettlebell is one of the most adaptable weights you can own. Some of the more modern ones even come with an instructional DVD that will lay out workout plans.

Rubber Resistance Bands ($30) – With bands, you can replicate most of the machines in the gym. Use bands for everything from bench press to bicep curls.

Adjustable Dumbells ($300) – Just two dumbells can give you a full set’s worth of weights; the adjustable variety go in 2.5-pound increments from 5 to 25 lbs. And they take up less floor space, too.

EXTRAS: Balance Ball ($30) – The big, inflatable ball can help you develop core muscles. Do normal exercises while laying or leaning on the ball to help engage your stomach, back and thighs.

TOTAL: $415, or less than $35 per month!

Then, feel free to get physical…

Sounds like a good deal if you want to avoid the costs of the gym or if you like to just work out on your own. I guess the adage, “Shape up” or “ship out” can be applied here (pun intended), right Fiona? Fiona? Fiona? Oh well. Miss you.
