Musicians are notorious for demanding outrageous backstage comforts in their dressing rooms to enjoy before a show. Sir [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Elton John[/lastfm] requires a colorful assortment of flowers (but absolutely no lilies, carnations or daisies), famous vegetarian [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Paul McCartney[/lastfm] won’t stand for any type of animal skin furniture even if it’s artificial, but the infamously sexy [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Rod Stewart[/lastfm] revealed quite the unique request on his backstage rider.

The singer likes to kill time before a show by meticulously building miniature model train sets in his dressing room…a very different kind of model passion Stewart’s known for enjoying.

In an interview with Model Railroader magazine, Stewart explained he requested a table in his dressing room for his backstage past time of working on model building for his miniature railway. Using a fan to avoid inhaling glue fumes that could harm his vocal chords, Stewart passes his pre-show time getting every small detail down to the advertising placements right on his models.

But one thing that doesn’t mix with building model railways is alcohol. Stewart admits, “I can’t build after a couple of glasses of wine — the results are never good.”

But he does enjoy a cup of tea to take a break from the tedious work saying, “When I find myself focusing so intently on a model that it ceases to be fun, it’s time to walk away, have a cup of tea and come back to it later.”

According to Stewart, a good model builder takes “an eye for proportion, a sense of what fits naturally, right down to the placement of the advertising signs.”

So when you catch Rod Stewart on tour with Stevie Nicks at the Hollywood Bowl this April, now you know how Stewart spends his time preparing for the show!
