When you hear it between two and three this afternoon be caller # 7 to win tickets to see Natalie Cole with The Pacific Symphony…we’re talking about [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Marvin Gaye[/lastfm]’s “I Heard It Through The Grapevine.”

This Motown classic about a man who finds out his woman is cheating on him was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong. Whitfield and Strong wrote “Ain’t Too Proud Beg,” “Just My Imagination,” and “Money (that’s What I Want).”

This was the longest running Motown # 1 hit. It topped the US chart for 7 weeks. This was Gaye’s first # 1 hit. He had another 5 years later with “Let’s Get It On.”

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Gladys Knight[/lastfm] and The Pips had an earlier release in 1967 and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Creedence Clearwater Revival[/lastfm] released an 11-minute version in 1970. It was one of the few songs CCR recorded that they didn’t write.

Marvin sang his version slightly higher than his normal range, which created the strained vocal.

That’s caller # 7 when we play it between two and three for Natalie Cole tickets…1-800-232-KRTH (5784). Good luck!

I just love Marvin Gaye’s version of “I Heard It Through The Grapevine. His version is the best. Reminds me of the dances I attended as a 10th grader at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights (L.A.). …everyone was on the dance floor for this song.

Love Motown and love Marvin Gaye, especially that song. It’s a damn shame he had to leave us so early (murdered by his father of all things!). Wasted life! Awesome song!
