The hit Fox TV phenomenon Glee has officially dethroned and crushed the King of Rock and Roll’s record for scoring the most charting singles on Billboard’s Hot 100 in just two seasons of the show. The show has ruled TV ratings and digital downloading charts with its catchy renditions of popular hits from artists ranging from [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Beatles[/lastfm] to [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Britney Spears[/lastfm] since first premiering.

There’s no doubt this popular show has taken over the world, and Gleeks everywhere tune in each week to watch the artist themed shows, but does this really mean they’re bigger than Elvis?

The Glee cast just released six more songs that charted within the Billboard’s Hot 100, which tallied their grand total to a whopping 113 charting singles over two seasons of the show. They’ve officially surpassed Elvis Presley’s former record of 108 charting singles throughout his career, and already beat out the Beatles’ 71 singles late last year.

The show began releasing their artist covers as singles a year and a half ago, but fewer than one-fourth of their poppy hits manage to remain on the charts longer than one week. Plus, the show is releasing every recording from Glee as singles, say if Elvis were to do that during his career, the numbers would be drastically different.

So can the Glee club really say their modernized covers are bigger than Elvis’ original releases over his career, or does Elvis still remain King? Tell us what you think about Glee beating Elvis’ record!

To me Elvis will always be the king of rock ‘n’ roll and Memphis is where I dream of falling in love with Fiona. Glee sounds like a great show (have never seen it, YET) , but think for a minute, can a TV show just because they’ve outperformed a singer in chart topping hits really be considered a “phenomenon”? Maybe in it’s category (Television). Maybe it’s more popular then shows like “MASH” or “THE FACTS OF LIFE” or “ALL IN THE FAMILY”, but the fact remains, to me Elvis will always be the king of rock ‘n roll no matter who tops him in the musical charts As Archie Bunker would say, “CASE CLOSED!”

Elvis IS and will ALWAYS be the King! The fact that he held this record for so long is a testament in and of itself to his status and importance in our culture and the music world! He is considered the King for so many more reasons though…not just record sales alone. He still holds concert attendance records to this day, 34 years after his death and 55 years since he started! Not to mention all the other firsts in his career. More people watched his 68 Comeback Special then watched the landing on the moon! How about the billion and a half people worldwide that saw his Aloha from Hawaii concert…which was the first concert to be broadcast live via satellite and the first concert album to be recorded in stereo quad…Need I go on. There simply is no comparison here to a group of cover artisits who will be forgotten about in the years to come. No one will know (or care) who Glee is in 30 or 40 years. Elvis has nothing else to prove. He has proven it over and over and over. There is no argument or comparison here. To borrow a quote, “Before anyone did anything, Elvis did everything!”
