Today it’s [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Doobie Brothers[/lastfm]’ first # 1 single “Black Water.”

Patrick Simmons, who is the group’s guitarist, wrote it and sang lead. It has that Louisiana-swamp rock feel. It’s about the Mississippi River, with lyrics likely inspired by Mark Twain books Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, which depicted life on the river.

As a matter of fact, the group was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and were just getting ready to go on stage when their manager told the Doobie’s their song just reached # 1.

We’ll take lucky caller 13 when we play it between two and three to wind tickets to see the dance sensation “Burn the Floor” at the Segerstrom in Costa Mesa; 1-800-232-KRTH (5784).
