Most widely known as the dynamic saxophonist in the [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band[/lastfm], musician [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Clarence Clemons[/lastfm] (aka “The Big Man“) suffered a stroke in his home in Florida on Sunday. After reportedly undergoing two brain surgeries, Clemons is said to be in stable condition with his vital signs improving after the serious stroke.

As the oldest member of the E Street Band, the 69-year-old Clemons has suffered other health issues in the past, including spinal fusion surgery and having both knees replaced, which left him performing in a wheel chair.

According to an update from the L.A. Times, a friend of Clemons told the Springsteen magazine Backstreets on Monday, “Yesterday, it did not look good at all. Today… miracles are happening. His vital signs are improving. He’s responsive. His eyes are welling up when we’re talking to him. He was paralyzed on his left side, but now he’s squeezing with his left hand.”

Clemons has worked with Springsteen since the late ’70s, most notably having a strong sax presence on the album Born To Run. Most recently, he’s collaborated with pop mega-star [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lady Gaga[/lastfm] on her new album Born This Way and even performed with the Mother Monster on the American Idol stage.

Members of the E Street Band are being urged to head to Florida to visit Clemons as he recuperates. You can check “The Big Man” in action on the title track on one of Springsteen’s biggest albums, Born To Run.

  1. RainbowRay says:

Say a prayer for Clarence Clemons! I love Bruce Springsteen and his days with ther E-Street band. My dad had a storke when I was six and it paralyzed his entire lieft side and effected his life and our family’s life (of course also mine) until they day he died (back in 85). Miss him alot as well despite the very difficutl times! That’s why I’m pursuing Eric’s Mirror and RainbowRay dreams (especially Eric’s Mirror) which is about a dysfunctional family just klike mine was. Just need Fiona by my side, starting in Memphis!

family, good friends (not perfect, but friends that give a damn and who can be inspiring to you in some way) and of course good health; that’s what life is all about, right?
