25 years ago this week, it was an interesting competition for the coveted #1 spot at the top of the charts. The band that had the #1 single beat out a solo artist…who used to be in the band!

The #1 single was “Invisible Touch” by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Genesis[/lastfm]. Let’s see if you can guess the song by the former Genesis member who had the hit at #2! It was a song best known for its music video. In fact, the video ended up winning 9 MTV Video Music Awards in 1987.

The answer:

That’s right, it’s “Sledgehammer” by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Peter Gabriel[/lastfm].

The record still stands…no other video has been able to accomplish the feat of winning 9 MTV VMAs.  Peter Gabriel definitely paid the price. He had to spend 16 hours under a sheet of glass shooting the video!

And here’s the video for the #1 single this week back in 1986, “Invisible Touch!”
