The largest rock festival of all time will be held in just a couple of weeks on the Isle of Wight.  East Afton Farm off the coast of England will host 600,000 rock and roll fans.

For five days, from August 26th through the 30th, power house acts like [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jimi Hendrix[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Chicago[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Who[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Doors[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]John Sebastian[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Richie Havens[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Emerson Lake and Palmer[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Joan Baez[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Ten Years After [/lastfm]and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jethro Tull [/lastfm]will take the stage on the Isle of Wight.

It’s the middle of August, 1970, and these were the songs we were listening to; the Top Ten Tunes this week, 41 years ago.  Where were you???

This Week  (last week’s position in brackets)

1.    CLOSE TO YOU/[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Carpenters [/lastfm](1) — their first hit.  It’s spending it’s 4th and final week in the top spot.

2.    MAKE IT WITH YOU/[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bread [/lastfm](2) — also a “first hit.”  David Gates and company will hit #1 next week with this.  Though they’ll have a long list of chart favorites, this will be their only #1 song and will stay on the top for a week.

3.    SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED I’M YOURS/[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Stevie Wonder[/lastfm] (3) — Stevie’s 10th top ten song since his debut in the summer of ’63 with “Fingertips.”

4.    SPILL THE WINE/[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Eric Burdon and War[/lastfm] (4) — Eric’s only hit collaboration with Long Beach’s [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]WAR[/lastfm].  War will go on to score many hits on their own in the 70’s.

5.    IN THE SUMMERTIME/[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Mungo Jerry[/lastfm] (12) — new to the top ten, this will peak at #3 in mid September.

6.    WAR/[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Edwin Starr[/lastfm] (11) — also a newcomer to the ten most popular tunes in the country this week, this is an anti-war song protesting America’s long time involvement in Viet Nam.

7.    BAND OF GOLD/[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Freda Payne [/lastfm](5) — Freda’s only top ten hit.   She’ll enjoy a few more fairly successful releases during the next year, but none as big as this one, which peaked at #3 a few weeks ago.

8.    MAMA TOLD ME (NOT TO COME)/[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Three Dog Night[/lastfm] (6) — #1 for two weeks in July, this was the group’s first of three #1 songs (“Joy To The World” and “Black And White” would follow as chart-toppers).

9.    TIGHTER, TIGHTER/[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Alive and Kicking[/lastfm] (7) — this song was first offered to Tommy James, but Tommy chose to pass on it and gave it to Alive and Kicking.  It was also on Tommy’s long time record label, Roulette.

10.  BALL OF CONFUSION/[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Temptations[/lastfm] (9) — peaking at #3 a few weeks ago, this is the 12th time the biggest male vocal group of Motown has hit the top ten.

We’d love to hear from you!!!  Where were you and what were YOU doing in Mid-August of 1970?  Your comment is welcome!!!
