British producer Nigel Lythgoe has had huge cross over success with his hit TV shows like American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance over the years. But what does he think of former Idol judge Simon Cowell’s new U.S. version of the singing competition show The X Factor, which premiered this week?

“I can stand here with my hand on my heart and say I say the last five minutes,” Nigel tells Gary. “It looked fantastic. I don’t know where you go from here — it was so big, so giant…In American Idol, we always start small…if Cowell is going to grow this, God, he’ll be taking over the world!”

Nigel had some pleasant words to the Idol alum on his new show, but does think “it has a long way to go yet” to get the numbers up to where Idol is now.

Nigel also talks to Gary about scoring season 9 of So You Think You Can Dance on Fox and how the show has helped its contestants move to big things including being featured on another hit dancing show, Dancing With The Stars.

“We’re a little seed bed for Dancing With The Stars,” says Nigel.
