Top Ten Songs Inspired By Pets

It’s no question people love their pets – we pamper and spoil with treats, toys and affection and in return receive an unconditional love from our furry best friends. Even musicians have a soft spot for their pets and some have even gone as far as writing songs inspired by their pets! Check out these top ten hits written and inspired in honor of a pet!

1. “Old Shep” — Elvis Presley

This song was originally written by Red Foley and Arthur Willis in honor of a German Shepard named Hoover Foley used to own. Elvis later covered this hit and helped make it a country classic.

2. “How Much Is That Doggie In The Window?” — Patti Page

Patti Page’s novelty hit in 1953 shot to No.1 on the Billboard charts for eight weeks straight.

3. “Ben” — Michael Jackson

A song originally written for the 1972 film of the same name, a sequel to the killer rat film Willard in 1971, this hit about an unlikely  friendship with a rat became Michael Jackson’s first No.1 solo hit at the age of 14.

4. “I Love My Dog” — Cat Stevens

Straight and to the point, Cat Stevens’ first single off his debut album was written about his dachshund he rescued as a child.

5. “Martha My Dear” — The Beatles

Paul McCartney wrote this hit about his sheepdog Martha.

6. “Mandy” — Barry Manilow

In the song’s original version titled “Brandy” and recorded by Scott English, he told reporters the song was about a dog so they’d leave him alone, but even in Barry Manilow’s popular version “Mandy,” the urban legend still sticks.

7. “What’s New Pussycat” — Tom Jones

Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, this single was made popular by Tom Jones, and is also featured as the title track of the movie  starring Peter Sellers.

8. “Shannon” — Henry Gross

This song written in honor of Beach Boys’ Carl Wilson’s Irish Setter named Shannon, was an international hit for Gross in 1976.

9. “Me and You and a Dog Named Boo” — Lobo

Written about a dog, Lobo’s 1971 debut single became one of his biggest hits of his career.

10. “Me And My Arrow” — Harry Nilsson

Released off of Nilsson’s sixth album, The Point, this song was inspired by a pet dog.
