Though Nylon Curtain was an interesting album, it didn’t generate the kind of sales figures to which Mr. William Joel had become accustomed. With An Innocent Man, he returned to his roots and moved millions.

Classic pop, rock and doo-wop, with a touch of Drifters-esque rhythm and blues is the perfect summary of what An Innocent Mans ten songs offered the Billy Joel fan.

“Tell Her About It,” Joel’s homage to Motown swing and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Four Seasons[/lastfm] harmonies, was the first single release, racing to #1 and paving the way for four more Top 40 hits.

“Uptown Girl,” written about his then-fiance, Christie Brinkley, followed by hitting #3 on the US charts and spending countless weeks on the MTV video charts (in no small part because of his future wife’s starring role).

The tender balladry of the title track, the soft doo-wop of “The Longest Time” and the strolling “Leave a Tender Moment Alone,” featuring the harmonica work of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Toots Thielemans[/lastfm], all highlighted Joel’s remarkable talent for a great melody — and all landed in the Top 40.

Since its release on August 9, 1983, An Innocent Man has topped 7 million in sales.
