Paul Simon Documentary ‘Under African Skies’ Premiering At Sundance

The new documentary following [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Paul Simon[/lastfm]’s journey back to South Africa to revisit the making of his influential album, Graceland, is making its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22nd.

The anticipated doc, Under African Skies, follows Simon as he travels back to the land in celebration of the 25th anniversary to revisit with the local South African musicians and retell the making and controversy that surrounded the iconic album.

Directed by award-winning director Joe Berlinger (Brother’s Keeper, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster), the doc gives a fresh perspective from Paul Simon as he meets with the original local South African musicians he collaborated with, including a special reunion Graceland concert.

The doc also explores the controversy the resulted after recording Graceland when Simon decided to travel to South Africa to record with local musicians. Though artistically, his album created a new fusion of American and African world music, Simon was later accused of “breaking the UN cultural boycott of South Africa designed to end the Apartheid regime by visiting the land.”

After its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, Under African Skies will screen at several international film festivals, plus a limited theatrical release and showings on A&E.

Later in the spring, fans can also expect a Graceland 25th anniversary commemorative edition deluxe collector’s box set and a special two-disc set, both featuring the original album with bonus tracks and the director’s cut of Under African Skies.
