While their rivalry was very much real back in the day, now good friends Magic Johnson and Larry Bird are taking their past court conflicts all in jest with the premiere of their new Broadway play Magic/Bird.

The two recently appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman to discuss the new play about their ‘frenemies’ relationship and the classic ’80s sneaker commercial that first sparked their everlasting friendship. Also, watch Letterman ask the ultimate question…who is the better player, Magic or Bird?!

The two NBA legends appeared in a Converse commercial in 1986 that plays them out as competitive rivals and offers fans to “choose your weapon” with either the Bird Shoe or the Magic Shoe. Watch the classic spot below!
