As we remember the legacy of TV host, producer, and music pioneer Dick Clark after the sad news of his death Wednesday afternoon, we’re taking a look back at some of the most memorable music moments from the show that introduced hundreds of new artists to the masses; American Bandstand.

The long-running hit dance and music show first debuted in 1952 and ran until 1989, with Clark being the friendly face of the show from ’56 until its final season. Many stars were born thanks to AB, and many moments went down in history right on that very stage from The Twist to Madonna’s famous remark. Take a look back on the show that started it all!

Madonna— After performing her smash hit “Holiday,” Dick Clark had a brief interview with Madonna about how she got her start, and when asking her what her dreams were for the rest of her career, Madonna famously replied, “to rule the world.” A star was born after that appearance.

Chubby Checker –In 1962, an unknown fella by the name of Chubby Checker debuted a new dance craze, the Twist, into living rooms across the country.

Michael Jackson –The King of Pop returned to AB as a solo artist to perform his 1971 hit “Rockin’ Robin.”

The Doors — AB helped make L.A. locals The Doors a household name when they performed “Light My Fire” on the show.
