This weekend at a music festival in Las Vegas, Bon Jovi and punk-rockers Green Day shared the bill – but it wasn’t the first time the two bands had done so. Certainly Green Day remembered this, as frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told UK music magazine Kerrang! (via NME) earlier this fall that Bon Jovi was the worst band they ever played with. However, this isn’t ringing a bell for Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora.

“I have no idea what happened with that, I actually don’t recall them opening for us,” Sambora told Rolling Stone with a laugh. “Either I was incapacitated at that point or I just don’t remember it. I’m sorry he had such a bad time.”

The concert in question did in fact happen, though Green Day did not open for Bon Jovi – it was the other way around. At a holiday radio concert held December 5th, 1994 at NYC’s Madison Square Garden, hot new band Green Day played the headlining slot, while Bon Jovi – at a turning point in their career – played several slots beforehand. Others on the bill included Sheryl Crow, Hole, Weezer, Indigo Girls and Toad the Wet Sprocket.

While Bon Jovi won’t be hitting the road with Green Day any time soon, fans can expect a new tour and album from the Jersey rockers come spring. “Somewhere around March or that vicinity, the new Bon Jovi record will come out and then we’ll be on the road with that,” Sambora said.

As for Green Day, Armstrong was admitted to a treatment facility for substance abuse just one day after sharing the stage with Bon Jovi for the second time and having an on-stage meltdown
