Fans have one last chance to pay their respects for the California icon who introduced many to the fun, unique and inspiring treasures the Golden state has to offer.

L.A. City Councilman Tom LaBonge is spearheading a sunset memorial service in honor of Huell Howser, who passed away Sunday at 67, at Griffith Observatory Tuesday, January 15th.

“Huell had a tremendous enthusiasm for California landmarks like the Griffith Observatory,” LaBonge said in a statement, according to LA Times. “And now we must say goodbye to our own California landmark, Huell Howser.”

Fans of the longtime California’s Gold host are invited to come celebrate the life of Huell beginning at 3:30 p.m., where they will hear speeches, tributes and give one final sunset salute to the local icon just after 5 p.m. as the sun sets over the city he loved so dearly.

Tributes and salutes have been pouring in since the KCET host’s passing. Earlier this week, we spoke to Gloria Pink of Pink’s Hot Dogs, who told us about the restaurant’s tribute ‘Huell Dog’ and celebratory banner hung in memory of Huell, which you can see below.

City Councilman Tom LaBonge called in to the K-EARTH 101 Morning Show to tell us more about this special community tribute to reflect on Huell’s influence in so many lives.

“Huell Howser was one of the greatest citizens of this state,” said Tom. “I felt it was real important to not let this moment pass without a community for a tribute for what he’s done to educate, to inspire, to bring happiness to the people of this state.”
