CBS 2’s Juan Fernandez Talks About His Experience Covering The Dorner Manhunt At Big Bear

It’s the story everyone around the world was fixated on all week; the manhunt for alleged cop-killer Christopher Dorner was underway all week up in the snowy mountains of Big Bear resort.

CBS 2 KCAL 9 news’, Juan Fernandez was one of the reporters from the news team bringing all the incredible breaking  coverage of the Christopher Dorner search as it happened up at Big Bear this past week.

Juan called in this morning to tell us about his first hand experience being right in the action and being the first reporters to get the tip of a Dorner sighting in the area from a local Big Bear resident.

“A guy in the next lane asked us to roll down our window and told us ‘they got him! They got him down highway 38’,” explained Juan. “So we just turned the news van around and headed towards that area, and before you know it, we were in a caravan of CHP and San Bernardino Sheriff Deputies and made it to the very last check point before they shut it off.”

Juan explains that fellow CBS 2 reporter Carter Evans happened to already be with the search team that was later engaged in gunfire with Dorner, and was caught right in the line of fire himself.

“He was really in the right place at the right time to get that audio and to witness what he did,” said Juan, who later congratulated his colleague for his incredible coverage.

Though Juan was near all the dangerous action in the search for Dorner, he says he never felt like he was in danger because of the amount of CHP and law enforcement in the area.

Though there has been no confirmation that Dorner’s body was found in the cabin that burnt down, San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon did said the manhunt for Christopher Dorner is over.

When asked how he thought the search for Dorner would end, Juan said that there were three scenarios he could see panning out.

“Number one would be that they would find him in a cabin with a bullet in his head; number two would be that he gave us all the slip and he was in Mexico or overseas; and the third one was what he wanted. He was going to go down in a blaze of glory,” said Juan.
