Lauren Silberman, 28, broke down gender barriers this weekend by becoming the first female to try out for the NFL at the New York Jets’ practice facility.
Silberman tried out as a kicker with 36 other hopefuls, but her practice didn’t go as well as planned. Her first kick only traveled 19 yards and her second just 13, plus she walked away with an injury to her quadriceps.
While her tryout didn’t go as well as she hoped, Silberman, a former club soccer player from Wisconsin, has been commended for her effort and courage going into the tryouts in the male-dominated sport.
“I’ve always been an athlete, and I’ve always been a gamer,” she told CBS News. “When I had the opportunity to be in the NFL, one of the world’s most competitive leagues, I absolutely had to take the chance.”
Though Lauren won’t be the first female in football, she’s opened the door for other women who might share the same dream.
