Say it ain’t so! All this time turning to our favorite comfort foods when we’re feeling down, and now a new study revealed that it’s actually making us feel worse, not better.

According to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, eating those typically unhealthy (but oh so delicious) comfort foods doesn’t boost our moods.

“There was little in the way of mood changes right before the unhealthy eating behaviors,” said Kristin Heron, Ph.D according to CBS Atlanta. “However, negative mood was significantly higher after these behaviors.”

That means when we turn to that chocolate bar or bag of chips to “eat our feelings” when stressed, depressed or angry, it’s not making the situation any better in the long run.

The study said that the negative moods felt after eating unhealthy foods stems from concerns with body image and maintaining a proper diet. Researchers collected data from 131 women with unhealthy eating habits, but no signs of an eating disorder, by asking participants to answer questions about dietary choices and mood throughout the day on a handheld computer.
