The story and legacy of baseball great Jackie Robinson is fresh in our minds after the movie biopic ’42’ hit theaters this weekend, debuting at No.1 and raking in $27.25 million.

Now on the official MLB’s ‘Jackie Robinson Day’ today, the great American baseball player will be honored with many more celebrations across the nation, particularly here at Dodgers Stadium.

To mark the 66th anniversary of the Hall of Famer’s first time putting on a Brooklyn Dodgers uniform in 1947 thus breaking down color barriers in the Major Leagues, the boys in blue will pay tribute to Jackie with various pre-game activities and tributes during tonight’s matchup against the San Diego Padres.

In addition to the league-wide tradition of every player donning the number ’42’ jersey today, the Dodgers’ Monday night celebrations include special guest appearances by Jackie’s wife, Rachel, and his family.

“My family and I are honored to be part of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ celebration honoring Jackie on Monday,” said Rachel Robinson, wife of Jackie Robinson in the event’s press release. “Remembering Jackie and what he has meant not only to baseball and the Dodgers but also to remember and celebrate the impact he had and continues to have on society is very special. We look forward to joining Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, the Dodgers and their fans in what will be a very memorable tribute to Jackie’s legacy.”

Dodgers Stadium will be decorated with ’42’ logos on the pitchers mound, dugout, and baselines, plus special ‘Jackie Robinson Day’ jeweled plates.

The first 40,000 fans in attendance will also receive a Jackie Robinson, Don Newcombe and Roy Campanella Statue presented by the film ’42.’

Tickets are still available to take part in Jackie Robinson Day at Dodgers Stadium today as L.A. takes on the San Diego Padres (hopefully without another brawl incident). Purchase tickets at or by calling 866-DODGERS.
