Rocky Balboa is gearing up to step into the ring once more – this time on the Broadway stage. The story of Sylvester Stallone’s beloved boxing character is getting the Broadway treatment for a musical adaptation coming next year.
“Rocky: The Musical” is already a knockout in Hamburg, Germany where it made its debut last fall, but the story of Rocky based on the 1976 film will be heading to New York’s Winter Garden by February, reports Billboard.
Stallone is co-producing the musical with Stage Entertainment USA, which will feature a score written by “Ragtime” veterans Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens and the story by Thomas Meehan, who also penned the hits “Hairspray’ and “The Producers.”
The musical follows the film’s storyline of the underdog fighter, nicknamed the “Italian Stallion,” who gets his chance at taking on the heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, played by Carl Weathers in the film.
“It’s a story that can go on for generation to generation about how everyone is entitled to a moment of dignity,” Stallone said about the story of Rocky.
