Many fans are shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of actor James Gandolfini on Wednesday, June 19th. James died at the too young age of 51 after suffering from a heart attack while on vacation in Italy, reports CBS New York.

While his acting legacy ranges from movies, TV and the stage, the New Jersey native was perhaps best known for his iconic role as the troubled crime boss Tony Soprano on HBO’s hit drama The Sopranos.

For nearly a decade, James embodied the role of Tony Soprano, which garnered him three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series over the show’s six seasons. He eloquently delivered the dynamic script by creator David Chase bringing the character to life, and though he may have had a hardened exterior, Tony Soprano also shared his wise philosophy on life, family and the world.

Below, we rounded up some of James’ most memorable lines as Tony Soprano that made this tough mob boss one of the most relatable on a human level.

On waking up and putting on a brave face:  “I find I have to be the sad clown: laughing on the outside, crying on the inside.”

On respect: “Those who want respect, give respect.”

On life: “They say every day’s a gift, but why does it have to be a pair of socks?”

He wasn’t much for nostalgia: “‘Remember when’ is the lowest form of conversation.”

On following rules: “If you can quote the rules, then you can obey them.”

On knowing what you want: “A wrong decision is better than indecision.”

On sharing his feelings: “Let me tell ya something. Nowadays, everybody’s gotta go to shrinks, and counselors, and go on Sally Jessy Raphael and talk about their problems. What happened to Gary Cooper? The strong, silent type.”

On happiness: “The things I take pleasure in, I can’t do.”

On his family: “To the people I love, nothing else matters.”

On life: “Someday soon, you’re going to have families of your own. And if you’re lucky, you’ll remember little moments like this…that were good.”
