Nigel Lythgoe Talks ‘Celebration Of Dance’ Gala, Royal Baby & ‘American Idol’ Departure

Television producer Nigel Lythgoe is known for his work on some of the biggest reality TV shows in America including American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance among many others. Recently nominated for seven Emmy Awards for his accomplishments on SYTYCD, Nigel is now gearing up for another big production all for charity with his Dizzy Feet Foundation.

Nigel joined The K-EARTH 101 Morning Show today to talk about his foundation’s upcoming “Celebration of Dance” gala, which also coincides with National Dance Day this Saturday, July 27th!

The Dizzy Feet Foundation’s Celebration of Dance gala is Nigel’s annual fundraising event presented jointly with The Music Center at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The Gala features exiting performances by talent from So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing with the Stars, American Ballet Theatre and DFF community & scholarship recipients among many special guests.

In the evening, the gala hosts a black-tie event featuring A-list celebrity guests like Anna Kendrick, Paula Abdul, Christina Applegate and many more surprises all to help raise money for the foundation.

“All of the monies from that will go towards scholarships and inner-city programs for dance,” said Nigel.

Being a native Englishman, Nigel is of course following all the Royal Baby news this week. He tells us that he once had the pleasure of hosting the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate, at an event in Los Angeles where he served as the chair of the British Academy.

When asked if he had any idea what the royal couple plans to name the future King, Nigel quipped, “I know that Simon Cowell has asked them to name it after him.”

In recent news, Nigel has been at the center of the American Idol drama when he was suddenly fired as executive producer of the show. When asked if he was upset about the decision to let him go from the show, Nigel responded that he was, but it was for a reason.

“If you feel as though it’s your baby, I was the executive producer that sort of created it from a piece of paper, so yes,” said Nigel. “At the same time there had to be drastic measures taken, or seem to be taken, because of this sliding of the ratings. For me, I think American Idol has always been compared against itself, which has always been difficult.”

Despite his departure from American Idol, Nigel is still highly involved with his other productions, especially his Dizzy Feet Foundation.

The festivities for his “Celebration of Dance” gala take place Saturday, July 27th beginning at 10:00 a.m. with the show starting at 6:30 p.m. For tickets to the Dizzy Feet Foundation’s Celebration of Dance Gala, visit
