Having literally ran into the K-EARTH 101 studios this morning, the creators of the long-running TV series COPS, John Langley and his son Morgan, joined us to talk about hit reality show returning for its record-breaking 26th season!

COPS has just kicked off its 26th season on a brand new network moving to Spike TV this past weekend, and one thing fans can still count on is plenty of action and bizarre run-ins the officers encounter on the job.

Though COPS has been running strong for 24 years now as the first and only unscripted television show on air, John and Morgan tell us that the road to get the show on TV was an uphill battle. When John and Morgan were pitching the show to executives, they told them that the show wouldn’t work because it didn’t follow the accepted formula of the time.

“They kept saying that ‘oh there’s no way this is going to work without a host, without a narrator, without scripts, without re-enactments, blah, blah blah,” John laughed.

He added that during test screenings of the show, one executive pushed to get rid on one now iconic part of the show – the theme song.

“The classic was one of the executives says ‘we did a focus group and everything’s great except one thing.’ And I said ‘yeah, what’s that?’ and he said ‘the music’s got to go,’ ” John recalled.

Well, we all know how it worked out for John and Morgan in the end, and now COPS has flourished on several major networks and continues with an all-new season on Spike TV.

You can catch COPS every Saturday night at 8 p.m. on Spike TV. Listen to our full conversation with John and Morgan Langley and listen to some sound-bites from the new season of the show in the clip below.
