Michael J. Fox Reveals Past Battle With Alcoholism

Last night, beloved actor Michael J. Fox made his grand return to television with the debut of his new sitcom appropriately titled The Michael J. Fox Show.

The show is a humorous take on his life living with Parkinson’s, which he recently opened up about living with in his real life.

According to the New York Daily News, Fox opened up about how he dealt with his Parkinson’s diagnosis during an interview with Howard Stern on Wednesday, saying that he coped by “drinking heavily” at the beginning.

When Fox, 52, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s back in 1991, he said “my first reaction to it was to start drinking heavily. I used to drink to party, but now I was drinking alone and … everyday.”

He revealed that he hid his self medication with alcohol for almost a year, describing his alcoholism as a “knife fight in a closet, where I just didn’t have my tools to deal with it.”

It wasn’t until he sought therapy that Fox finally turned his life around and got clean and sober. Now, Fox is excited about his return to TV and hopes America is too.
