K-EAGLES 101 Archive: Don Felder Sings “Hotel California” Live In Studio

In celebration of switching to K-EAGLES 101, we dug through the station archives to revive a past interview the Morning Show did with former Eagles guitarist Don Felder.

Don Felder joined The K-EARTH 101 Morning Show with Gary Bryan and Lisa Stanley on July 30, 2008, which happened to be one day after the 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit Chino Hills. Luckily, Don wasn’t in the L.A. area when the earthquake hit, but was doing a charity gig in Portland, Oregon that day.

Don was in studio to promote his new tell-all book titled Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles (1974-2001), which gave an inside look at the tumultuous relationships between bandmates and what led to his termination from the group in 2001.

Don also told the story behind how he ended up joining the group in 1974 after his good friend and Eagles founding member Bernie Leadon introduced him to the band members.

“When I moved out to LA, I would go hang out at their rehearsals and see Bernie and, you know, we were friends,” explained Don. “When they went in to make the ‘On The Border’ record, they were really trying to shift direction from being a really straight up country band into more of the AM format of the 70s, which was rock and roll and R&B.”

He continued that “they wanted somebody to come in who could carry that rock and roll load” and was invited to their studio to play on a track “ironically” called “Good Day In Hell” and, well, the rest is history.

So go back in time in the K-EAGLES 101 audio archive and listen to the morning show’s interview with Don Felder in the segments below.

Part one: Don talks about his new book Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles (1974-2001), giving Tom Petty guitar lessons, being in a band with Stephen Stills before they were old enough to drive and how he happened to join the Eagles.

Part two: Don talks about what inspired him to write “Hotel California” and sings an unplugged version of the song live in studio.
