Today's Tickets @ 2 Song: "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey
By Britt Bickel

In celebration of switching to K-EAGLES 101, we dug through the station archives to revive a past interview the Morning Show did with Eagles songwriter JD Souther.

Souther, the Eagles songwriter and Glenn Frey’s longtime musical collaborator, joined the K-EARTH 101 Morning Show on June 16, 2009 to talk about his career with the Eagles and share stories behind some of the songs he’s written.

One such story included a long-debated rumor that the 1977 hit “New Kid In Town” was written about Bruce Springsteen. At that period of time, the Eagles were the hot ticket in town with the release of their trademark album Hotel California, but Springsteen’s star was just beginning to rise around the same time.

When asked if he, along with Don Henley and Frey, wrote the song about Springsteen’s sudden rise to fame, Souther adamantly denied those claims.

“No,” JD said with a laugh. “No, it’s not about anybody. We were writing about our own replacements, whoever they are. It’s just that gun slinger thing, you know, you can be fast, but two weeks later there’s gonna be some kid that comes in to town with a faster gun, that’s all.”

Souther was also behind the Eagles first No.1 hit “Best Of My Love,” which he says “came together like all the songs, slowly.” But you can’t rush genius, and Souther notes that his favorite part of the song is the “secret tuning” that Frey discovered on an old folk song.

Listen to JD Souther talk about the inspiration behind “Best Of My Love” and sing an unplugged version of the song live in studio below.
