Known for being at the forefront of the rock and roll scene in LA since founding in 1964, The Whisky A Go-Go was called home to some of the most important acts in music whose influence still looms in the halls of the club.

This Sunday, the iconic LA club affectionately called The Whisky, celebrates its 50th Anniversary with a huge concert event featuring headlining act Martha Davis and the Motels, plus many other special guests. This morning, Martha joined The K-EARTH 101 Morning Show to talk about this major LA milestone and what the Whisky has meant to the band over the years.

In the band’s beginnings, Martha said that they used to play on the Whisky stage all the time.

“We used to do that show on a pretty regular basis back in the day,” said Martha. “Just knowing you that your were going to play the Whiskey, that was it, you made it.”

Martha also told us what the origin behind her band name “The Motels,” explaining that name spawned from driving down Santa Monica Blvd. after an old gig at Barney’s Beanery.

“At that time we were called The Angels of Mercy…and we’re driving down Santa Monica and in the old days that was motel row,” she explained. “[Dean Chamberlain] looked up and he sees this sign and says ‘what about the Motels?’ and I said ‘Bingo, that’s it!'”

Martha also recalled what it was like coming up as a band during the beginning of the MTV era.

“That whole video time, it was wonderfully creative. When we first started doing it, there was no union…you’d run out, shoot in a place where you didn’t have permits for, grab people off the streets to be in your video,” she said. “In the ‘Only The Lonely’ video the bartender…had literally just gotten off a bus, so one of the youngsters working on the video was like ‘hey do you want to be in a video?’ and he goes ‘uhh, sure’.”

This Sunday’s event at the Whisky also serves as a birthday celebration for Martha, who will introduced on stage by special guest Rosanna Arquette. Other guests scheduled to appear are Three Dog Night’s Chuck Negron, NCIS star Pauley Perrette, actor Eric Roberts and many more.

“It’s going to be hilarious, Hollywood fun time,” said Martha.
