Billy Joel Helps Paul Rudd & Adam Scott Recreate ‘Bosom Buddies’ Opening

It’s been 34 years since the 1980 sitcom Bosom Buddies starring Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari first aired on ABC, but it recently got thrown back in the spotlight thanks to funny men Paul Rudd and Adam Scott.

Rudd and Scott debuted the last installment of their Greatest Event In Television History series on Adult Swim Thursday night, which was a shot-by-shot remake of the opening sequence of Bosom Buddies.

For the sketch, Rudd and Scott stepped into the roles originally made famous by Hanks and Scolari and perfectly recreated each shot of the show’s original opening sequence.

As many fans of the show can recall, the classic sitcom followed around two best friends who concoct a plan to dress up as women in order to rent a cheap apartment in a women’s only building.

Not only did the show feature an aspiring Hanks in the lead role, but the opening credits also featured Billy Joel’s 1978 song “My Life” as the show’s theme song. However, due to licensing issues, Joel’s vocals were replaced by a sound-a-like singer.

For the shot by shot remake, Scott and Rudd enlisted the help of Joel to come and sing the vocals in the recreation for the first time ever.

In the skit, Joel is shown rehearsing “My Life” with Scott and Rudd, who jokingly give the Grammy-winning singer a hard time about not getting the sound right and asking him to sing it “more like the guy from the show.”

The sketch also gives a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the recreation and features plenty of star-studded cameos by Community‘s Gillian Jacobs, Mo Collins, Aisha Muharrar, Helen Slayton-Hughes and Saturday Night Live‘s Aidy Bryant, and even Tom Hanks himself.

The entire sketch is worth watching, but if you’re in a rush, skip to the 4:30 minute mark to see Billy Joel’s funny cameo with Adam Scott and Paul Rudd. Watch the final shot-by-shot sequence at the 9:20 minute mark.
