Stephen Bishop Talks Oscar-Nominated Songs, Friendship With Phil Collins

Many fans know singer Stephen Bishop by his hit Oscar-nominated song “It Might Be You,” which was used as the theme song in the 1982 film Tootsie. Stephen called in to The K-EARTH 101 Morning Show to talk about what an impact that song has had on his career and how it’s lived on as a popular wedding song.

“With that song especially, it’s a big marriage song. People like to play it while they’re getting married” he explained, adding, “I’ve sung that song at weddings probably about, I don’t know, twenty weddings. I even had to sing it at my own wedding!”

Stephen also struck Oscar-gold two years later with a second nomination for his song “Separate Lives” recorded by Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin in the movie White Lights. However, the song ultimately lost to Lionel Richie’s song “Say You, Say Me,” which was also used in the same film.

“That was a real heartfelt [song], it came from a real experience with this actress I was going out with,” he said, keeping mum on who the actress was.

Though out of the song “Separate Lives,” Stephen struck up a friendship with Phil Collins, whom he met through Eric Clapton’s former wife, Pattie Boyd.

“I was friends with Phil since the early days,” he said. “Back then, it was ’78. he had a huge beard, he was a whole different kind of guy. Genesis was more like a fusion band. We just started hanging out and we became friends, and he really liked my songs…he produced on an album called ‘Bowling In Paris.'”

This Saturday, Feb. 8th, Stephen will be performing these big hits and more at the Japan American Theater at 8:30pm. For tickets and show details, visit
