Mick Jones of Foreigner called in this morning to talk about his incredible connection to the Fab Four when he just starting his career in music. Mick told us his story of how his band had the opportunity to open for The Beatles in France, and how one encounter during a show at the Paris Olympia resulted in becoming part of their inner circle.

“The Paris Olympia is one of those kind old music hall setups where the curtain comes down in between acts, and one evening the curtain came down and snagged my guitar and pulled the guitar and me down to the ground,” he explained. “I issued a bunch of expletives in English and John Lennon came up behind and said ‘we didn’t know you were English, we thought you were a frog.'”

Mick says Lennon then invited him up for a drink with the lads after that encounter and says “from that point they kind of took me under their wing.”

While supporting The Beatles on tour in France, Mick says he got a little taste of all ‘Beatlemania’ during its height when A Hard Day’s Night was filmed.

“I lived ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ with them for a few weeks. In and out of these big limos and they’d be running out of these cars and me with them trailing along. It was intense,” Mick recalls.

Getting the chance to perform on the same bill as The Beatles was “a spiritual experience” for Mick, who of course later founded Foreigner in 1976 and saw his own success with hits like “I Wanna Know What Love Is,” “Feels Like The First Time,” “Cold As Ice” and many more.

“I think that time I spent with them was just so magical that I just thought to myself after they left… ‘if I could just get a little bit of that in my life,'” he said. “If you look back…Elvis Presley kind of opened the door and the Beatles just came in and there was a revolution in music. They changed the world.”
