Dozens of celebrities, musical acts, family and friends turned out for The Beatles anniversary special The Night That Changed America: A GRAMMY Salute To The Beatles last month, but one familiar face was noticeably missing from the audience during the CBS broadcast on Feb. 9th – Julian Lennon.

Many fans pointed out that John Lennon’s son wasn’t seen alongside extended family members Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon for the tribute, and now he’s recently spoken about why he was absent from the special.

In a recent interview with New York-based music site Brooklyn Vegan, Julian explained why he decided to skip out on the anniversary special, saying that “it was all a bit too much” for him.

“To me, the last thing I wanted to do was stand in the audience with everybody else, clapping my hands, and being filmed in front of millions while watching a Beatles karaoke session,” he said in the interview.

Though Julian noted that it was great so many great acts would be present to pay tribute to his late father and the rest of the Fab Four, he ultimately decided to pass on going to the show. To him, he’d much rather just listen to the original records than hear artists pay tribute to the classic songs.

“Give me the originals any day. I’ll listen or watch the originals any day, and that’s my cup of tea,” he added. “That’s why I decided that I much more preferred to be in a state of reflection and appreciation and doing something much more subtle and much more heartfelt, in my mind, than the glitz and the glam of those kind of shows.”

Julian did however become involved in a separate tribute to The Beatles earlier this month. He was the curator for Morrison Hotel Gallery exhibit ‘Golden Anniversary of the Year America Met the Beatles’, which featured a selection of rare and never before seen photos of the group on display at both the New York and West Hollywood galleries.
