It’s been years since we’ve last seen George Lopez with his own TV show, now finally his long-awaited return to primetime is here.
George called in to The K-EARTH 101 Morning Show to tell us about his brand new comedy series Saint George, premiering this Thursday night on FX.
“It’s a good show…it’s got a tremendous group of actors and you know George Lopez is coming back to TV,” he said, noting that some of the show’s premise is based on his real life. “Saint George is about a guy who is trying to get his life together after a divorce. He’s got a kid that he doesn’t spend a lot of time with. He’s got an overbearing mother…I had one and a grandmother in real life.”
George says he put together a great cast that includes Machete actor Danny Trejo, who plays his uncle, David Zayas of Dexter fame, who plays Trejo’s son, and Justified actress Jenn Lyon, who plays George’s ex-wife.
If you were as surprised as us that George was able to get Danny Trejo to do comedy, he tells us that he actually wrote the part with him in mind even though he’s never done comedy.
“We got him to come in, and the greatest part of all of this, is that he came in and read with me…and he looks at me and says ‘hey, Georgy, I’m not gonna let you down.’ He’s been very supportive of me over the last week. Danny Trejo hasn’t had a drink in over 45 years, so he won’t be hanging out with me anytime soon.”
Of course George was referring to his recent brush with the law when he was arrested for public intoxication in a Canadian casino last Thursday. Many people, including Lisa Stanley thought with the timing of his new show, that it was all a publicity stunt, but George clears up what really happened that night.
“It’s funny, you’re not the first person that’s asked me if it was a publicity stunt,” said George. “Unfortunately, I did have a lot to drink, and I know better. But occasionally as humans, we falter, and it might have been in Windsor, Canada, you know that Patron is good stuff.”
He joked about the now-infamous photo of him laying on the casino floor “was taken so fast” and that his people “were around,” but “when you fall, everybody gets out of your way.” Luckily, people did help him up to his feet afterwards.
“In this life, you have to laugh. I made a mistake…I’m a transplant recipient. It doesn’t make me perfect, but I will treat myself better and I continue to help other people,” he said adding that the controversy was a “blip in the road.”
