Artists Who Sound Like Other Artists

Have you ever heard a song on the radio and thought it was sung by a big group only to find out later that it was by someone entirely different? We’ve all made that mistake at some point, but many people can go for years thinking a song is by a certain group, only to get a truth-bomb of who the real artist is later on.

We threw out the question to our listeners on air this morning and on Twitter; here are a few examples our followers came up with!

Below, we listed a few examples of artists who sound just like other artists.

Orleans/The Eagles

Many people (including Gary Bryan’s wife) thought this hit by Orleans was by The Eagles.

Stealers Wheel/John Lennon

Released in 1972, many thought the hit “Stuck In The Middle With You” by rock group Stealers Wheel was a John Lennon track. But it was Gerry Rafferty singing this single, which he originally wrote as a parody of Bob Dylan.

The Outfield/The Police

Both hailing from London, it’s easy to mistake the high falsettos of The Outfield’s Tony Lewis for Sting on their 1985 hit “Your Love.” Though ultimately, The Outfield didn’t enjoy the same breakout success in the U.S. as The Police and disbanded in the ’90s.

Stacey Q/Madonna

When Stacey Q released her hit pop single “Two Of Hearts” in 1986, many people thought it was Madonna’s doppelganger rushing up the charts.

Ready For The World/Prince

With the same drum beats, synthesizers and funky bass line, it was no wonder many thought Ready For The World’s 1985 track was none other than the Purple One himself, Prince.

This morning, we even got a hold of the group’s lead singer Melvin Riley! He tells us that the group is currently on tour and even gave his thoughts on releasing a song that sounded so much like Prince.

“When it first came out, everybody thought it was [Prince],” said Melvin. “But once the video came out and we started touring and everything, everyone started associating us soley with ‘Oh Sheila.’ ”
