John Lennon & Yoko Ono Share Their Secret To Love In Animated PBS Interview

Every Tuesday, PBS digital studios releases a weekly web series titled Blank On Blank, where lost interviews with iconic performers, entertainers and figures are transformed into whimsical animations. This week, PBS released a touching interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, who share the secret to their loving marriage.

The animated clip titled “John Lennon And Yoko Ono On Love” features revealing interviews that were conducted by Howard Smith between 1969-1971. The episode was beautifully animated by Patrick Smith.

The clip begins with Lennon explaining to Smith that the secret to their marriage is “called love – there’s nothing to split that up.” He adds that “you got to work on it. It is a precious gift, and it’s a plant and you got to look after it and water it…that’s the secret. It’s all true folks. All you need is love.”

Lennon explains in the interview that the two found love late in their lives. Ono, who was 32 when she met a 29-year-old Lennon, explained that she was beginning to lose hope on love and become cynical before she met Lennon.

“I can’t give you the formula for meeting the person you love, but it’s around and it happens,” says Lennon in the clip. “It’s a long wait, and I thought it was an abstract thing, you know? When I was singing about ‘all you need is love’ I was talking about something I hadn’t experienced.”

Smith asks Lennon why he and Ono decided to go through with a traditional marriage ceremony at a time when ceremonies were going out of fashion with Lennon responding that “we turn out to be romantics.”

And if there is such a thing as being ‘too close’ to the one you love, Lennon urges that “if you love somebody, you can’t be with them enough. There’s no such thing – we don’t want to be apart.”
