Watch Paul McCartney’s Futuristic New Video For ‘Appreciate’

Paul McCartney is giving us a glimpse into the future in his new video for the song “Appreciate” off last year’s release, New.

In the video released Friday, Paul is on display in the futuristic ‘Museum Of Man’ that is patrolled by a robot night guard named Newman (as in New-man, Rolling Stone points out). Newman walks the hallways and inspects different museum displays featuring typical human scenes of families at the dinner table, kids playing soccer, a model in a photo shoot and more until he stumbles upon McCartney holding his Höfner bass guitar.

In an instant, Paul comes to life and Newman pulls him through the invisible force-field enclosing him in the display. Paul starts singing the inspiring lyrics “Lift up your head/And remember what your life is/Don’t have to give it all away/When you’re left for dead/In the middle of a crisis/You must appreciate the day” as other human displays come to life.

On how he came up with the concept of Newman, Paul explained in a statement on his website, “I woke up one morning with an image in my head of me standing with a large robot. I thought it might be something that could be used for the cover of my album NEW but instead the idea turned out to be for my music video for ‘Appreciate’. Together with the people who had done the puppetry for the worldwide hit ‘War Horse’ we developed the robot who became Newman.”

Paul premiered the video in Japan, where he is currently on tour. He returns to the U.S. in June for 18 dates, including his Dodger Stadium show in Los Angeles on August 10th.
